Legal medicine implications in fibrinolytic therapy of acute ischemic stroke.Monica Sabau, Simona Bungau, Camelia Liana Buhas, Gheorghe Carp, Lucia-Georgeta Daina, Claudia Teodora Judea-Pusta, Bogdan Adrian Buhas, Claudia Maria Jurca, Cristian Marius Daina & Delia Mirela Tit - 2019 - BMC Medical Ethics 20 (1):1-9.
Before the advent of fibrinolytic therapy as a gold standard method of care for cases of acute ischemic stroke in Romania, issues regarding legal medicine aspects involved in this area of medical expertise were already presented and, in the majority of cases, the doctors seem to be unprepared for these situations. The present research illustrates some of the cases in which these aspects were involved, that adressed a clinical center having 6 years of professional experience in the application of fibrinolytic (...)

  5. Embodying the mind and representing the body.Adrian John Tetteh Alsmith & Frédérique de Vignemont - 2012 - Review of Philosophy and Psychology 3 (1):1-13.
Does the existence of body representations undermine the explanatory role of the body? Or do certain types of representation depend so closely upon the body that their involvement in a cognitive task implicates the body itself? In the introduction of this special issue we explore lines of tension and complement that might hold between the notions of embodiment and body representations, which remain too often neglected or obscure. To do so, we distinguish two conceptions of embodiment that either put weight (...)

Do Natural Disasters Affect Corporate Tax Avoidance? The Case of Drought.Christofer Adrian, Mukesh Garg, Anh Viet Pham, Soon-Yeow Phang & Cameron Truong - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 186 (1):105-135.
Natural disaster events such as drought affect the broader economy and inflict adverse consequences for firms because of spill-over effects in an integrated economy. Contrary to the expectation that firms would engage in higher levels of corporate tax avoidance strategies when they experience a negative cash flow shock, we document consistent evidence that firms engage in less corporate tax avoidance when their headquarter states experience drought. Reduced tax avoidance is more pronounced among firms with higher CSR performance and among firms (...)

The article explores the challenges of ensuring voluntary and informed consent which is obtained from potential research subjects in the north‐eastern part of Romania. This study is one of the first empirical papers of this nature in Romania. The study used a quantitative survey design using the adapted Quality of Informed Consent (QuIC) questionnaire. The target population consisted of 100 adult persons who voluntarily enrolled in clinical trials. The informed consent form must contain details regarding the potential risks and benefits, (...)

Applying big data beyond small problems in climate research.Benedikt Knüsel, Marius Zumwald, Christoph Baumberger, Gertrude Hirsch Hadorn, Erich M. Fischer, Reto Knutti & David M. Bresch - 2019 - Nature Climate Change 9 (March 2019):196-202.
Commercial success of big data has led to speculation that big-data-like reasoning could partly replace theory-based approaches in science. Big data typically has been applied to ‘small problems’, which are well-structured cases characterized by repeated evaluation of predictions. Here, we show that in climate research, intermediate categories exist between classical domain science and big data, and that big-data elements have also been applied without the possibility of repeated evaluation. Big-data elements can be useful for climate research beyond small problems if (...)

Avoiding Broken Noses.Adrian Sackson - 2014 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 6 (2).
The intellectual affinity between Thomas Reid, on one hand, and American pragmatists such as Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey, on the other, has been noted by several scholars. Indeed, Peirce himself professed an admiration for Reid and referred to his own Pragmatism as entailing what he called “Critical Common-sensism.” In recent times, a number of scholars – chiefly Baumann, Magnus, and Lundestad – have investigated the pragmatist elements in Reid’s thought. Each has identified important ways in which (...)

    I Tensed the Laws and the Laws Won: Non-Eternalist Humeanism.Marius Backmann - 2016 - Manuscrito 39 (4):255-277.
ABSTRACT In this paper, I propose a variant of a Humean account of laws called "Open Future Humeanism", which holds that since the laws supervene partly on future events, there are at any instant infinitely many possible future courses of events. I argue that if one wants to take the openness of the future that OFH proposes ontologically serious, then OFH is best represented within a growing block view of time. I further discuss some of OFH's problems which stem from (...)

Urban Debt, Neoliberalism and the Politics of the Commons.Adrian Parr - 2015 - Theory, Culture and Society 32 (3):69-91.
The rural/metropolitan/wilderness hybrid central to urban shrinkage directly challenges a commonly held belief that a city consists of a dense concentration of people living in a limited geographical area, one where the primary means of production is non-agricultural. In addition, the urban condition of shrinkage tests the dominant current of growth management that has guided urban design, development, and land use. In this essay we will explore how this hybrid presents an alternative to the production and realization of surplus value (...)

    Local Acausality.Adrian Wüthrich - 2014 - Foundations of Physics 44 (6):594-609.
A fair amount of recent scholarship has been concerned with correcting a supposedly wrong, but wide-spread, assessment of the consequences of the empirical falsification of Bell-type inequalities. In particular, it has been claimed that Bell-type inequalities follow from “locality tout court” without additional assumptions such as “realism” or “hidden variables”. However, this line of reasoning conflates restrictions on the spatio-temporal relation between causes and their effects (“locality”) and the assumption of a cause for every event (“causality”). It thus fails to (...)

    Relevanz und Kontext.Adrian Wieczorek - 2024 - Philosophisches Jahrbuch 131 (1):8-36.

The secularism of post-secularity: religion, realism and the revival of grand theory in IR.Adrian Pabst - unknown
How to theorise religion in International Relations (IR)? Does the concept of post-secularity advance the debate on religion beyond the ‘return of religion’ and the crisis of secular reason? This article argues that the post-secular remains trapped in the logic of secularism. First, a new account is provided of the ‘secularist bias’ that characterises mainstream IR theory: (a) defining religion in either essentialist or epiphenomenal terms; (b) positing a series of ‘antagonistic binary opposites’ such as the secular versus the religious; (...)

The present paper is aimed at the teachers (to be) of human sciences (especially economics) and offers an in-depth commentary and interpretation of Hans- Georg Gadamer’s view of the concept of question and the activity of questioning. The goal of the paper is to circumscribe the conditions of interrogation thus offering the teachers (to be) a means of enhancing the didactic efficiency of the learning sequences based on questioning.

On the Very Idea of Imposition. Some Remarks on Searle’s Social Ontology.Marius Bartmann - 2014 - Rivista di Estetica 57:155-164.
In his book Making the Social World, John Searle gives voice to an aspiration that is very popular in social ontology. This aspiration consists in the notion that social objects can be reduced to physical objects. From this perspective, social objects are nothing more than physical objects on which we impose functions that are merely subjective and therefore external to them. Now, my paper has two objectives. In the first part, I want to show that Searle’s account entails some sort (...)

Obra de arte y naturaleza en la lectura trascendental de la metapsicología freudiana de Paul Ricoeur.Adrián Bertorello & Julieta Bareiro - 2016 - Areté. Revista de Filosofía 28 (1):7-30.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the aporia of the epistemological status of Freudian metapsychology as represented by Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. This aporia centers on the concept of psychic nature as the ultimate target of metapsychological speculation. The question this article addresses is whether the psychic apparatus that emerges from metapsychological speculation responds to a conception of nature that belongs to a physical model or a phenomenological model. This question has an ambiguous answer in Ricoeur’s work. In order to (...)

Management as a Moral Art: Emerging from the Paradigm Debate.Adrian Carr - 2004 - Philosophy of Management 4 (3):71-86.
In recent years organisational and management discourse has been akin to a battle-ground. Open challenges to the foundations of these fields and competing truth claims have arisen from the plurality of interpretation that is possible from the variety of new paradigms that has emerged. This proliferation of paradigms seems to undermine the possibility of a single unambiguous voice to guide management practice. The variety of competing voices that has produced this discordant chorus is described. The work of Thomas Barr Greenfield (...)
